I have a coworker who grew up in Alabama, and we were chatting about our favorite restaurants. He asked if I'd ever had good Southern cooking, and when I said no, he recommended Jackie's Place. That very night, after work, he introduced me to this amazing restaurant. Jackie's Place is super casual and inviting. We were seated at a table by a friendly staff member who asked if we'd been there before. My coworker, a regular, explained that we needed to get our own water and go to the front counter to order when we were ready. There was a self-serve water station right near our table. He ordered a fish dish, and I decided on the smothered chicken with black-eyed peas and mac & cheese. The chicken breast was thin, fried, and covered in onions and gravy--absolutely mouthwatering. The mac & cheese was pretty standard but tasty. I'd only ever heard of black-eyed peas, but these were made with smoked turkey and were absolutely fantastic. When you're done with your meal, just head up to the counter to pay. Oh and lastly for dessert, we had the banana pudding, and oh my gosh, it was rich, silky, and so delicious that I can almost taste it as I write this. Whether Southern cooking is a staple for you or you've never tried it, you need to check out Jackie's Place.
The food was okay. Chicken could have been fried a lot harder The fried fish was super good! And the rice and gravy was flavorful but the yams could have been sweeter We waited about 40 mins to eat inside on a Sunday
Overall: 4.5/5 Solid choice. I was in San Jose visiting from out of town and wanted some good Southern food, and found a solid spot! Here is what my family ordered and how the food scored. Southern Fried Fish - 5/5 - Delicious! Seasoned, cooked to perfection! Tartar sauce was on point! A definite must try! Uncle Gregs Ribs - 5/5 - Fire!! One of the most tender pork spare ribs I've ever had! The BBQ is just right! Definite must try Mac and Cheese - 5/5 - Delicious! That good classic homestyle Mac and Cheese, executed very well! Candied Yams - 4/5 - Sweet n Savory! Cook very nicely. Just a tad too sweet, but everything else about them on point! Cornbread Muffin - 4.8/5 - Fire!! Sweet, buttery and that nice crispiness around the edges! Try dipping it in Jack's Sauce Syrup, you can thank me later ;) Fries - 5/5 - Crispy and good! Potato Salad - 4/5 - Very good! One of the best potato salads I've had at a restaurant. Most restaurants do not have a good potato salad, this is a solid choice. Dripping fried chicken sandwich - 4/5 - Fire!! Perfectly cooked, Juce, crispy, execution on point! Warning, if you get that buffalo sauce, be ready for some heat! Brisket - 3/5 - Smoke flavor was spot on! But the brisket was a little on the dry side. Keep in mind, I came in on a Saturday at around 7:30pm. It's possible that the Brisket was smoked and cooked earlier in the day and it can be hard to keep brisket juicy and moist for hours after its been cooked. If I would've came earlier, I probably would've got the brisket when it was just made and Im sure it would've been juicy! Peach Cobbler - 2/5 - This ain't it! I ordered mine warmed up and it came cold out the fridge. I'm such a peach cobbler enthusiast. It didn't matter I ate it cold. The cobbler was lacking. A little too much cinnamon, the crust just wasn't there. Koolaid - 2/5 - Too SWEET! Yo, this Kool-Aid is diabetes sweet! Lol! Frfr, I took a sip, and my doctor called me, lol. I would recommend to do about half the amount of sugar. Customer Service - 5/5 - the staff was super friendly and helpful. I felt very welcome. Price - 4/5 - Definitely reasonable in this economy! Overall, a solid choice! I think the pricing is pretty fair considering today's market. This is a self serve restaurant so there's no waiter or waitress. You order your food and they bring it out, then your on your own. I would definitely go back if I was in the area. Great experience!
I can't believe I haven't left a review yet. I've been twice and man the food so good I wish I lived closer. Each time we've gone we were seated immediately, they do it busy so you may have to flag down someone if you need something or have questions. The fried fish and chicken so good and crispy. The brisket is like butter. All the sides are good and flavorful. I am so happy the food matches the hype definitely some of the best bbq and soul food in the bay
So glad we found this place!! They serve up some really good BBQ and homemade southern food! We had the brisket, fried fish, bbq rib tips, hot links, and two kids meals- one with chicken and one with a rib. All of it was delicious! You could taste the smoky flavors in the brisket, bbq rib tips, and ribs. They were all so tender and juicy. The fried fish and chicken were so nicely crisp on the outside, while on the inside the fish was nice and flaky, while the chicken was juicy and flavorful. For our sides we had the green beans which has some good flavor to it, the candied yams that were sweet and filling, the rice and gravy, and beef chili beans which tasted so good! Service was simple, but efficient. You place your order through the QR code, pay through your phone, and they deliver your food. Wait was about 30 minutes, but it's definitely worth it! Just spark those conversations with your company or make some friends with the people sitting next to you, which is what we did! There's self service for waters, to-go containers, plastic bags, and even hand sanitizer. Utensils and napkins were on the tables as well. I love the way they allow you to self-serve here. The staff members at the restaurant were friendly and I could tell they worked really hard to clean, bring food out, replenish items, etc. We got a chance to meet the owner, Jackie and her sister Juju. They were both so kind and welcoming. Ambiance has a nice easy going vibe throughout, yet with a trendy/modern feel. Love the music they play. This is a place you really gotta visit when in San Jose. I highly recommend it. So glad we found this restaurant and look forward to coming back again and again!
This was one of those Oh-this-place-looks-really-good!-Oh-s***-I-already-have-it-bookmarked kinda places! And my golly Gawd, I'm glad I did! Here we go... I think we rolled up on a Sunday around nooner? Nooner-ish? There were a few groups ahead of us, but we were a small party, so we got seated pretty quickly. The place is pretty big, so there's tons of seating. We got a bunch different meats and some other ultra heavy carbo-overloado stuffs, and my holy f***, I needed three naps after this meal. The servings are quite gracious, and these days ya just can't beat that. Well, if it's GOOD, then you can't, but if you're fillin' my plate with all sorts of, well, "fillers", then I'm not interested. Quality AND quantity?? Sign me TF up babyyyyy!! Also, I think the leftovers lasted me for a solid two more meals. So yeah, 3 meals x 3 naps = 9 total naps from this place!! Maybe they should start serving these meals in giant beds? (Boondocks, if ya know ;) ) Anyway, stop thinking, start coming. You'll thank me laterz.
First impressions are everything. I got there when the doors opened to grab a takeout order before i headed to airport. Ordered: Oxtails and rice - 4 Greens - 5 Mac n Cheese - 3 This place is legit. Who knew you'd find a slice of "home" at a souls food spot in San Jose. Heard the owners are from Texas, but I don't know this with certainty. When I return and land, I'll be headed straight to this place! Desserts look tasty. Can't wait to explore the rest of the menu. When I'm in town for work, this will be a go to spot,
I usually don't come here that often. The service here is super good and they are friendly. It stays open a little longer compared to other bbq places. The vibes here were great too! Personally I think it's a little pricy and I was surprised there was gravy with rice but not with mashed potato's?! The meat was decent.
Pretty great place, amazing proportions. Couldn't try the ribs but overall would go again
